And One is a junior in high school and is interested in playing basketball at Ocean State University (OSU).  And would like to visit OSU’s campus this year to make sure it is a good fit for him.  When is And permitted to take an official visit to OSU?

A.  No earlier than August 1st of his junior year in high school
B.  No earlier than January 1st of his junior year in high school
C.  No earlier than August 1st of his senior year in high school
D.  No earlier than January 1st of his senior year in high school

The answer is A.  With the adoption of NCAA Proposal 2018-25, men’s basketball prospects are permitted to take official visits as early as August 1st of their junior year in high school.  Additionally, this proposal allows an institution to provide a  second visit during the prospect’s senior year in high school.  The effective date for this piece of legislation is August 15, 2018.

NCAA Bylaw 13.6.2.1.2 states that in men’s basketball, a prospective student-athlete may not be provided an expense-paid visit earlier than August 1 at the beginning of his junior year in high school. [D] (Adopted: 11/1/01 effective 4/1/02, Revised: 4/3/02, 8/5/04, 4/28/05, 5/12/05, 10/27/11 effective 8/1/12, 1/19/13 effective 8/1/13, 4/26/17 effective 8/1/17, 5/11/18, 8/8/18 effective 8/15/18)

NCAA Bylaw 13.6.2.3.3 states that in men’s basketball, an institution may finance one visit to its campus for a prospective student-athlete before the completion of his junior year of high school, one visit before October 15 following his completion of high school and one visit beginning October 15 following his completion of high school, including a visit related to a possible transfer. An institution may provide up to 28 official visits in a rolling two-year period. A national service academy may provide up to 34 official visits in a rolling two-year period; however, the institution shall not exceed 28 official visits prior to the initial date of the regular signing period of the National Letter of Intent of the first year in each rolling two-year period.
